Approved manufacturing methodologies for R9 will be updated by the Residence Collection to reflect the successful completion of testing on HWL Trade Frames’ pioneering non-glass bonded window.
HWL has driven innovation in R9 manufacture through the ground-breaking application of Timberweld® manufacturing technologies.
This has given the leading R9 fabricator an almost unique capability in the UK to UK to butt weld R9 window sashes inside and out, replicating the aesthetic delivered in a traditional 90° mechanical joint.
Now – and with extensive independent testing by R9 complete – the system house has confirmed that it is revising its manufacturing manual to include Timberweld® sash-welding technologies as pioneered by HWL.
Mark Haley, Managing Director, HWL Trade Frames, said: “We started supplying R9 unglazed 18-months ago, so it’s been a relatively long road but worth it because of the commercial advantage that it’s allowed us to deliver to our customers.
“Manufacture of R9 using Timberweld® means that we can deliver increased weld strength and that eliminates the requirement to glass bond the sash, in the vast majority of installations.

“The benefits are immediate. As an installer you can buy your glass from whoever you normally buy your glass from, if a unit needs replacing, you replace it in the same way as you would a standard unit.
“But most fundamentally, you take weight out of the installation, making it simpler quicker and reducing cost.”
Independent tests on HWL’s side-hung casement options were completed earlier in the year, returning a series of top-rated passes under BS EN 6375 – 1 weather testing and PAS24/Part Q. These were followed up with further tests delivered in partnership with the Residence Collection over the summer with a series of approvals on top-hung options.
With all of its’ pre-existing customers now buying its non-glass bonded R9 windows, HWL argues installers can cut their installation costs by up to a third by switching from buying in mechanically jointed sashes, to its Timberweld® R9 sash by reducing weight and simplifying handling and installation costs.
“We’re talking substantial sums”, continued Mark. “The weight associated with fitting larger glass bonded R9 windows almost always leads to more manpower increasing the fit cost. Taking out the glass, a two-team job becomes just a one team job.
“That could deliver savings of around as much as £120 per day or £360 on an average three-day install. If you’re paying per window at say £50 per window you could be looking at £500 back on a three-day fit on an average property with 10 windows and doors – that goes straight back on to your bottom line.
“It’s not about taking cost out of the product. It’s about taking it out of installation”, he concludes.
